_ 久しぶりに素晴らしい笑顔をした人に出会った。しかも，新聞紙上で。こんなにも微笑みの美しい人に「直に」会ってみたいとこころが動く。
その人の名は，ミカエル・ジャンさん（５１歳）。カナダの元首。今日の朝日新聞の「ひと」蘭に紹介されている。その記事によれば，「０５年９月，首相から推挙され，黒人初の総督に就任した。象徴的な立場だが，英連邦に属するカナダの，事実上の国家元首にあたる」とある。いまから４年前だから，４７歳で元首に就任したことになる。
見出しには，「元ハイチ難民のジャーナリスト」とある。長い記事ではないので，以下に転載しておこう。
カリブ海の島国ハイチに生まれた。独裁政権に父親が拷問を受け，１１歳のとき，家族とカナダに難民として逃れた。父親の暴力に母親が苦労するのを目の当たりにしたことから，虐待を受けた女性のための支援に学生時代から携わった。その活動家の顔が「私の原点」という。
カナダは建国の礎を築いた英仏系だけではなく，２１０の民族を抱え，移民も増え続ける。「移民にやさしい」多文化国家として発展する国を象徴する存在に，白羽の矢が立った。「人々が多様だと，国を豊かにしてくれる。世界中の人がいるということは世界とつながりが強くなるということ」。英，仏，伊など５カ国語を自在に操る。
著名なジャーナリストでもあった。ドキュメンタリー番組制作で表彰を受け，ニュース番組のアンカーを務めた。「人の話を聞くのが仕事。相手の思いを酌み取る訓練は今に生かされている」。就任後も行動力は健在で，極北の地でアザラシの心臓を口にしたこともある。
独自にサイトを立ち上げ，若者との対話を心がける。報じられる側に移り，「私だったらこう伝えるのにと思わないこともない」と笑う。
６日には日加修好８０年を記念して天皇，皇后両陛下を迎える予定だ。

なんともいえないこの微笑み。癒される笑顔だ。色が黒いのは当然だが，なんともやさしい眼差しである。厳密にいえば，眼はやや斜視だが，それがチャームポイントになっているのだから不思議だ。じっとみていると，やはり彼女のライフ・ヒストリーをとおして舐めた辛酸や，それらをクリアしてきた人に固有の懐の深さとこころの温かさが伝わってくる。それでいて，どこか遠くを見据えているような，深いまなざし。やさしい仏像のような，そこはかとなく安心感を与えてくれる。こういう顔をした人が，もっともっと増えてくるといいのだが・・・・。いまは，逆にどんどん姿を消している時代というべきか。
こういう人に出会うと，やはり，顔の表情というものは奥が深いなぁ，としみじみ思う。最近の日本人の顔はなんだか，どんどん薄っぺらになっているのではないか，と思う。男の顔で，自信に満ちた顔というものに出会うことが極端に少なくなってしまったように思う。わたしが大学に入って上京してきたころの東京には，「おれが日本を背負っている」というような顔をした人に，電車のなかでも出会うことがあり，圧倒されたものだ。最近は，こういう顔をした人に滅多に出会うことはない。女性はおしなべてむかしよりはきれいな人が増えたし，スタイルも格段に美しくなっている。にもかかわらず，うっとりするようなチャーミングな人に出会うことは少ない。どこに行ってしまったのだろう。
こころの奥底からおのずから滲み出るなにかが，ぱっと花が咲いたように広がる微笑み・・・。女性に限らず，男性にもそういう人がいた。しかも，かなり大勢いたように思う。最近もいないわけではない。ただ，あまりにも少なくなってしまった。寂しいことだ。なにが，そうさせてしまったのだろうか。このあたりのことを本気で考えないと，未来はみえてこない，としみじみ思う。政治も経済も，芸術も芸能も，そして，教育もスポーツも，人びとの顔を美しく輝かせることを第一義に考え直さないといけないのではないか，とミカエル・ジャンさんの微笑みに接して，気づかされた。
人の顔は大事だとしみじみ思う。
