だれが，いつから，「終戦記念日」と言いはじめたのか知らないままこんにちまでダラダラと生きてきて，ようやくその根拠を知って，びっくり仰天です。おやおやそうだったのか・・・と。「左右のイデオロギーが背中合わせにもたれ合った産物」だったとは・・・・。
となれば，なおのことこんごは「敗戦記念日」という表記を大事にしたいとこころに決めました。それが９月２日でなくてもいい。ジャーナリズムが足並みを揃えて「終戦記念日」と呼び，右から左までのすべての政党もみずから「終戦記念日」と呼ぶのであれば，なおのこと，一個人の「記憶」を再確認するためにも「敗戦記念日」と呼ぶことにしよう，とつよく思う。日本人の圧倒的多数が「玉音放送」を境に，「日本は負けた」とみずからに言い聞かせたことに間違いはない。これだけが唯一，日本国民が共有できる「記憶」だったのだから。
繰り返すことになるが，わたしにとっての１９４５年の「８月１５日」の記憶は，母の実家の寺の「広庭」（本堂の前の庭のこと）でのままごと遊びと直結する。じりじりと地面に焼きつくような太陽の日差し，真っ青な空，そよとも吹かない風，そして，大音声ともいうべき蝉時雨，まるで時間が止まっていたのではないか，というかすかな記憶。
そこから，つぎの記憶は，「ラジオの前にきて坐りなさい」と言われた声に飛ぶ。しかし，その声がだれのものだったのか思い出せない。あとは，ラジオの雑音，大きく波を描くように揺れる音声，そして「耐え難きを・・・」という独特の節回しの天皇の声。それがなにを意味しているのかは，あまりに幼かったわたしには理解できなかった。
しかし，「玉音放送」が終わって，大人たちがなにやら小さな声で話していることに聞き耳をたてているうちに，「日本が負けた」ということを知った。なにか緊張が解けて，ほっとしたような気分だった，そんな気がする。この記憶も定かではない。あるいは，「負けたなんて・・・」という失望もあったような気がする。なにせ，少国民になるべき徹底した教育を受けていたのだから。天皇がなんであるかも知るよしもなく，ただ，ただ，万歳と言えと言われれば，みんなと同じように「万歳！」と叫び，絶対的な指示にしたがって行動することだけが身についていたのだから。
いずれにしても「負けた」ということだけは強烈な印象となって残っている。だから，わたしにとっては，いまでも，まぎれもなき「敗戦の日」なのだ。少なくとも「終戦」などという穏やかなものではなかったことだけは確かである。「敗戦」を知らされた「日」以外のなにものでもない。だから，あえて言うとすれば，わたしにとっては「敗戦記念日」としか言いようがない。
政治とメディアが一体となって，「敗戦記念日」を「終戦記念日」にすり替えてしまう，歴史修正主義がここにも立派に機能していたという事実を，松浪君のツッコミが教えてくれた。わたしたちの「記憶」が，無意識のうちに「修正」されてしまうことの恐ろしさを肝に銘ずるべきだろう。
