_ １０月３１日（土）の朝日・夕刊に「秋巡業 出欠取りまーす」という大きな見出しの記事が大きな写真（巡業稽古）入りで掲載された。
なんというこっちゃ，というのがわたしの第一印象。大相撲も地に落ちたものだ，と。もはや，プロの意識もないのか，と。
小見出しをみて，さらに唖然。「サボり増え 改革」「親方衆が『考課表』」「やらずに済む時代が来れば」とつづく。
巡業の稽古をサボっていたのは朝青龍だけかと思っていたら，なんと「出欠」を取らなくてはならないほど大勢の力士たちが「サボって」いたのである。朝青龍は巡業をサボってモンゴルに帰国していて，サッカーに興じていたことがテレビで報道されてしまい，大騒ぎになった。しかし，巡業の実態を覗いてみると，巡業には参加するものの，合同の稽古（ファンに見せる稽古）は多くの力士がサボっている，というのである。見るにみかねた日本相撲協会が，全関取に対して稽古場に顔を出すように指導したという。
しかし，プロであるのに，なぜ，合同稽古をサボルのか。お客さんが大勢集まって見にきてくれているのに，なぜ，それをサボルのか。だれが考えたって不思議だ。たんなるプロ意識の欠如とかの問題ではないのだろう。それには，われわれには計り知ることのできない理由があるはずだ。
素人が勝手に想像して，決めつけることは避けなければならないが，それでも推測ぐらいは許してもらえるだろう。ということで，わたしの推測は以下のとおり。
合同稽古に行っても面白くないのである。全関取衆が集まってきても土俵は一つしかない。弱い力士の出番はほとんどない。ただ，立ってみているだけだ。だったら別のところで自主的に稽古をしていた方がいい。あるいは，筋トレでもやっていた方がいい。時間の無駄である。関取のなかには反りの合わない人もいるだろう。できることなら，顔を会わすのも避けたい，と。あるいは，本割と違って，みんな本気ではやらない。怪我をしないように，というのが本音。だから，適当に取り組む。相手によっては手の内を知られたくないので，わざと負けたりする。こうなったら，もう，稽古ではない。この他にもいろいろの理由を考えることはできよう。結論を急げば，要するに，合同稽古はほとんど意味がない，ということだ。だから，サボル。
これを「出欠」をとって縛りつけたところで，「改革」といえるのだろうか。そうではなくて，こういうお客さんサービスの方法に意味がないのだとしたら，どうすれば力士もお客さんも満足できるような稽古を見せることができるか，その方法を「改革」すべきではないのか。いい稽古ができるとなれば，力士だって放っておいても集まってくる。みんな強くなりたいのだから。
そのむかし，春日野部屋の稽古を見に行ったことがある。当時の名横綱栃錦が全盛時代のことである。ところがである。稽古場でもっとも強かったのは，出羽錦だった。横綱栃錦が関脇だった出羽錦に歯が立たないのである。それでも必死になって栃錦は出羽錦の胸を借りて稽古をしていた。ところがである。ある日の稽古場では，「一番勝負」の稽古をしていた。それは「一回」の取り組みに全力を傾け，終わると少し休んで，また，相手を変えて「一番勝負」を行う。そうなると，こんどは出羽錦は栃錦に手も足もでないで負けてしまうのである。つまり，一発勝負に集中してすべてを賭けることを得意とする力士は，通常の稽古は苦手なのである。とくに，小兵力士には，そういう人が多い。
こういう力士は，他の部屋に出向いて稽古をするのは嫌がるだろう。ましてや，合同稽古ともなれば，手の内は知られたくないから，本気ではやらない。適当に手抜きの稽古になってしまうだろう。これだったら，まったく，おもしろくもなんともない。だったら，サボって，別の稽古メニューをこなしていた方がいい，ということになってしまう。
新聞によると，親方衆は「考課表」なるものを作成して，出欠だけではなく，申し合いの番数と稽古の内容まで書きつけている，という。なにを考えているのだろう，と首を傾げてしまう。さらに，新聞には「土俵を囲んでも実際に申し合いに加わる幕内は出席者の半分程度」とある。そのくらいが申し合いに加わることのできる限度なのである。だったら，土俵を二つにするとか，三つにして巡回していく姿をお客さんに見せるとかすれば，力士だって手抜きもしにくくなってこよう。「改革」とは，そういう新しい方法を開拓することだろう。
でも，さすがに巡業部長（元大関旭国）は「チェックしないでいい時代が来るのを祈りたい。本当はみっともないことだから」と本音を吐いている。だったら，もっと，抜本的な「改革」をめざせばいいではないか。こんな，小手先の子供だましのような方法しか考えられないのだろうか。壁紙が古くなってきたから，新しい壁紙に張り替えよう，というのは「改革」でもなんでもない。壁を取っ払うくらいの「改革」を編み出してもらいたいものである。そのくらいの知恵者はいるはずだ。頭のいい力士はいくらでもいるのだから。
大相撲は日本の伝統「芸能」の一つなのだから，もっと「芸能」としての「見せ方」を工夫すべきではないか。外国人力士への指導も，この視点が欠けているように思えて仕方がない。間違っても，大相撲を「近代スポーツ」だなどと思っていてはいけない。見るわれわれも，力士も，親方衆も，そして横綱審議委員会のみなさんも。
