2009-11-23 愛知教育大学時代のこと。
_ 生まれて初めて定職につき，「月給」なるものがもらえるようになったのは満３６歳のときだった。その最初の職場が愛知教育大学だった。
しかも，勤務したのはたった２年だった。にもかかわらず，この２年間はとても濃密な時間だった。そのときの最初のゼミに集まってくれた元学生さんたちが，ここ数年，毎年のように懇親会をセットしたくれるので，わたしも喜び勇んで参加するようになった。
その懇親会が昨日（１１月２２日）に愛知県知立市で開催された。知立市は愛知教育大学のキャンパスのあるところ。最寄りの駅である名鉄電車の知立駅に降り立って驚いた。満３６歳のときに初めて知立駅に降り立ったときとまったく変わっていない。駅のプラットフォームも駅前のバスターミナルも，そのまま。あれからちょうど３６年が経過している。わたしも来年３月には満７２歳となる。３６年間，なんの変化もない駅舎というのは，いまどき奇跡に近い。立ち寄って駅のトイレの場所も同じ。ただし，以前よりは少しだけきれいになっていた。
この日の幹事さんは，知立市の中学校の校長先生（女性）。午前１０時に待ち合わせた数人を車に乗せて，まっすく愛知教育大学のキャンパスへ。これは，わたしの希望でそうしてもらった。知立市といえば八ツ橋の「かきつばた」が有名だし，旧東海道の松並木の一部が残されていることでも知られている。そちらを見てまわる選択肢もあったが，わたしは，初めての勤務大学であった愛知教育大学のキャンパスのなかを歩いてみたかった。これも３６年ぶり。
精確にいえば，１４，５年前に，特別講義のようなものを依頼されて，一度だけ尋ねたことがある。そのときは，車で送迎され，教室に直行して，終わったらそのまま懇親会になだれ込む，というスケジュールだったのでキャンパスのなかを散策するチャンスがなかった。なぜか，とても寒い日で，強い風が吹き，時折，雪が舞っていたと記憶する。
３６年前には，知立駅の近くを通っている国道１号線を横切ると，家もまばらになり，あとは見渡すばかりの田んぼが広がっていた。その田んぼのなかのわずかに隆起した丘陵地を切り開いて，整地したばかりのところに真新しいキャンパスがあった。だから，駅からバスに乗って通勤していたころも，はるかかなたからキャンパスを臨むことはできた。しかし，いまや大学のキャンパスまでびっしりと家が立ち並んでいる。駅前の変化なしにくらべて，キャンパス周辺はまったくの様変わりに，これまたびっくり仰天。その多くは，学生さん用のアパートであり，食堂・レストランであり，飲み屋さんである。もちろん，それなりの娯楽施設もちゃんとある。
もっと驚いたことは，キャンパスのなかのたたずまいがまるで変わってしまっているということ。以前は，あちこちに広々とした芝生の広場があって，その中に建物が点在している，とてもゆったりとしたキャンパスだったはず。案内をしてくれ，また，同行した元学生さんたちも同じ印象を語る。しかし，いまや，そんな広場はどこにも見当たらない。一つは建物が増えていること。もう一つは，芝生の広場だったところが，なんと竹藪と雑木林に占拠されてしまっていること。だから，まことに狭苦しいことはなはだしい，という印象。あの芝生の広場に囲まれた広々としたスペースのど真ん中にあったはずの「５０メートル・プール」がブッシュ（雑木林）に包囲されてしまって，なんだか泣きっ面をしていた。シーズン・オフなので水も抜かれていて，プールの底が剥き出しになっているので，ブルーのペンキがまだら模様にはげ落ちて無残な姿をさらしている。わたしのもっとも好きな風景だったところだけに落胆も大きい。歩きはじめたばかりの娘をつれてきてやると，とても喜んで，なかなか帰ろうとしなかったことを思い出す。
キャンパスのなかにある学生寮も塗装をしてないために，みじめな姿。野球場や陸上競技場も，周囲の立ち木が大きくなって覆いかぶさり，なんだか狭くなってしまったかと思う。図書館にも立ち寄ってみたが，ここももっと大きな建物だったように記憶するが，意外に小さいので驚く。それでも，よくよくみると増築している。だから，以前よりは大きくなっているはずなのに。
最後に，わたしが住んでいた教職員宿舎（キャンパスの北側に隣接）も覗き見してみた（車の中から）。ここも周囲の雑木が生い茂っていて，なんだかうらぶれたマンションにみえる。いま，ここに住めといわれたらお断りしたくなるようなみじめさ。ひょっとしたら空き部屋があるのでは・・・？
同行した元学生さんたちの意見によると，大学のキャンパスを維持・管理していくための予算が少なくて，竹藪を除去したり，雑木を伐採することができないのだそうな。だから，放置しておくしか方法がないのだ，とか。これもまた国立大学を「独立法人化」したことによるツケがこんなところに表出しているということなのだろう。研究と教育しかできない人間集団に，経営の責任まで背負わせた政治の責任は重い。いま，いわゆる「自由化」の結果として露呈してきた問題点が社会のさまざまなところに噴出している。なんでもかんでも「自由化」すればいいというものではない。絶対に「自由化」してはいけない組織や制度というものもある，ということをもっと深く考えるべきだろう。
こんなことを思いながら，キャンパスを歩く。
夜の宴会でも，学校現場のさまざまな問題（ちょっと公表できないような話題もふくめて）を聞かせてもらった。わたしにとってはいろいろと考えさせられる，とても刺激的な時間だった。そして，みんな必死になって，子どもたちを守るために日々智慧をしぼりながら格闘している，その姿に触れることができ，嬉しかった。日本の教育も，こういう人たちがもっともっと増えてくれば，まだまだ捨てたものではないだろうに・・・・。
