2010-04-30 触れてわかる「メディア」の実体。
_ ４月２９日の朝日・朝刊の「論壇時評」に，福岡伸一さんの「触れてわかる『媒体』の実体」というエッセイが掲載された。
この短い文章のなかに，よくぞ，これだけの情報を盛り込み，しかも，すんなりとわからせてしまう福岡さんの筆力にまずは脱帽である。いつも感ずることだが，福岡さんの文章はするするとからだのなかに染み込んでくる。それでいて，生物学の最先端の研究成果が盛り込まれている。代表作ともいうべき『動的平衡』などはその典型だ。その他の作品も，読み終わってからいつも驚いてしまう。今回のこのエッセイも同じだ。
いま，話題の「ｉＰＡＤ」をわざわざアメリカから取り寄せて，使ってみた感想から書きはじめる。そのなかの電子書籍ｉＢＯＯＫＳを「さわってみて驚いた」という。まるでほんとうの紙のページをめくるような感覚で自由自在に操れるのだそうだ。しかも，無線でネットとつながっているので，いつでも好きな本を購入することができる。おまけに，それらの本はこのｉＰＡＤのなかの自分の本棚に整理しておけばいいし，いつでも検索することができるという。そして，これからのメディアというものがどういう方向に道を開いていくのか，しばし考えた，というのである。
これが枕で，話の本題はこれからである。福岡さんはつぎのように書いている。
「ところで生物学の世界では，メディア（単数形はメディウム）といえば，それはシャーレの中で培養細胞を浸す栄養液のことを指す。細胞は，３７度に保温されたあたたかいメディウムの中で育つ。細胞たちはおそらく自分たちを取り囲む，この媒体（メディア）の存在を，ちょうど水の中に棲む魚が水という媒体の存在を知らないように，あるいは，私たちが空気や重力や温度といった媒体の存在を気にしないように，自覚してはいない。しかし，彼らはその媒体と確実に接している。その接点で媒体に支えられている。」
このように述べた上で，細胞を浸すメディアと，一般的にメディアと呼ばれているものがまったく同一のものだ，と強調する。細部の説明は割愛して，きわめて重要と思われる部分を抜き出しておくと，以下のようである。
「細胞にとってメディアとは，単に栄養素や酸素や成長因子を溶かしこんだ溶液（ストック）ではない。接する時，接した点で物質とエネルギーと情報の交換が行われる。それが生化学反応を引き起し，生命という動的な平衡を支える。そのとき初めて細胞にとってメディアはメディアとしての意味をもつ。」
わたしは長い間，新聞，雑誌，ラジオ，テレビといった情報を取り扱っているものすべてが「メディア」である，と漠然と受けとめていた。しかし，それは大きな間違いだった。それらは単なる道具であって，それ自体はメディアでもなんでもない，ということ。つまり，それらと「接する時，接した点」で初めてメディアとしての意味をもつ，というのだ。考えてみれば，そのとおりで，ただわけもなくわたしたちの周囲に存在しているだけならば，単なる「モノ」と変わりはない。その単なる「モノ」に対して，「おやっ？」となにかを感じたとき，それはわたしにとって「オブジェ」となる。そして，その「オブジェ」をさらに自分の方に引きつけて，自分のコントロールのもとに置いたとき，それは「事物」（ショーズ）となる。この「事物」となったとき，初めて「接する時，接した点」が成立する。これが「メディア」だというわけだ。納得である。
この話はまだまだつづくのだが，わたしがこの納得の仕方をしたときに脳裏をかすめたのは，ジャン＝リュック・ナンシーの「接触」によって生起する「分割／分有」（パルタージュ）という哲学の概念のことだった。ナンシーは，「接触」こそが「存在」を「存在者」たらしめる最初のきっかけであり，それはつねにインターアクションをもたらし「分割／分有」という事態が生ずる，と考えた。この話も，わたしが存在論なるものにのめり込んでいく，強烈なインパクトをもたらしたものである。
メディアもまた「接触」しなければ，メディアとしての意味をなさない，ただ，そこらへんに転がっている石となんの変わりもないものとなってしまう。その石も，わたしが「おやっ」となにか閃いたとき，それはオブジェとなり，それを道具として用いて「役に立った」とき（「有用性」が立証されたとき），それはわたしの「事物」（ショーズ）となる。
この福岡さんのエッセイの３倍ものスペースをつかって，東浩紀さんの「ネットが開く新しい空間」という評論が載っている。福岡さんのエッセイとどこかで共振するものがあるのだろうと感じたので，読んでみた。しかし，ほとんどなんの感興もわかないまま，いや，厳密にいえば，部分的には拒絶反応すら起こしながら（たまたま，わたしも読んでつまらない評論だと思った高名な国際政治学者のＦ氏の文章をとりあげ「好論文だ」と褒めあげていたので），読み終えた。そのせいもあってか，ほとんどなんの印象も残ってはいない。もう一度，読もうという気にはさらさらならない。これは，読んだことにはならない。わたしという個人と「接した時」も「接した点」もなかったに等しい。ただ，通過しただけの話。景色もなにも記憶がない。ということは，読んではみたものの，この評論は，わたしにとっては「メディア」としての意味をなさなかった，ということになろう。
福岡さんのエッセイは切り抜いて，大切にしまっておこう。そして，これから何回も読み返しながら，「メディア」とはなにか，と考えてみたいと思う。福岡さんには感謝あるのみ。これから書かれるものにもアンテナを高く張っておきたいと思う。
