_ 待望の『近代スポーツのミッションは終わったか』（平凡社）の見本刷りがとどいた。感慨無量である。
今福龍太，西谷修の両氏との共著。こういうビッグな人たちとの共著なだけに，これまでに経験したことのないそこはかとない喜びが沸き上がってくる。なんとも嬉しいことである。
振り返ってみれば，２００３年の秋，札幌大学でのシンポジウムを皮切りに，３人で４回ものシンポジウムを積み重ね，ようやくこんにちを迎えたわけである。一冊の本ができあがるまでには，さまざまな紆余曲折があり，じつに多くの人びとの支援があって初めて可能なのだ，としみじみ思う。時間だけでも丸７年を要している。それを思うと，もう二度とこのような本をなすことは不可能だろうとも思う。その意味でも，この本はわたしにとってはまことに記念すべき出版というべきだろう。
「ＩＳＣ・２１」（２１世紀スポーツ文化研究所）を立ち上げて１年半。この研究所にとっても，まことに嬉しい出版である。本のタイトルとなった『近代スポーツのミッションは終わったか』は，このまま「ＩＳＣ・２１」が問い続けるべき研究課題の一つでもある。その思いを籠めて，わたしが書名タイトルの原案を提示させてもらった。今福さんも西谷さんも快く賛成してくださり，すんなりと決まった。サブタイトルとなった「身体・メディア・世界」は，この本のキー・コンセプトをそのまま列記しただけである。しかし，この三つのキー・コンセプトをてがかりにして，われわれ３人は海と陸地の汀に立ち，打ち寄せる波のように何回も何回も「近代スポーツのミッション」とはいったいなにであったのか，執拗に問い続けたことも事実である。
「あとがき」にも書かせてもらったことではあるが，この本をまとめることによって，ようやく２１世紀スポーツ文化論を語るためのスタート地点に立つことができた，とわたしは確信している。問題は，むしろ，これからである。近代スポーツを論ずるための「土俵」ができあがったのだから，これからどのような相撲をとるのか，ひとえにこの一点にかかっている。かくなる上は，すぐれた力士を輩出させ，手に汗握るような熱戦を繰り広げるのみだ。わたしもまたその力士のひとりとして，からだを鍛え，スタミナを蓄え，技を磨いていかなくてはならない。できることなら，これからますます心技体のバランスをととのえ，もっともっと円熟した相撲道をきわめてみたいものである。
今夜はこの本を胸に抱いたまま眠りたい。そして，この本の内容に導かれるようにして，楽しい「夢」をみることにしよう。
御出版おめでとうございます。私もできるだけ早く本を手に入れて読ませていただきたいと思います（まだ、今日の時点でアマゾンには出ていませんでしたが）。先生は、このご著書を「土俵」になぞられておられますが、民俗学的に土俵はまさしく境界領域すなわち「汀」に設えられるものでもあります。地と智の汀である土俵に「接触」させていただくのを今からドキドキしています。
