2009-09-22 加藤周一亡きあとの日本の「知性」は？
_ 加藤周一さんが亡くなられ，日本を代表する「知性」の一角がくずれてしまった，と強く思う。
この加藤周一のあとを埋める人がだれになるのか，わたしは大いに注目している。医学から文学まで，思想・哲学・歴史から宗教はもとより，科学から芸術，そして国際関係（政治・経済・外交，など）にいたるまで，まことに守備範囲がひろく，しかも，世界的な視野でものごとを考え，ひとつの見識を提示しつづけた人をわたしは知らない。なにか困ったことがあると，加藤周一ならなんというだろうか，とここをひとつの拠点にして考える習慣がいつのまにか身についてしまっている。この姿勢はまだまだ当分，わたしのなかから消えることはあるまい。
しかし，その加藤周一さんが亡くなられたとなると，つぎなる加藤周一がだれなのかと見回してみる。これだけのスケールの大きさをもった論客はちょっと見当たらない。それほどにこの人の存在は大きかったということなのだろう。
でも，よくよく見回してみると，加藤周一の後継者になりそうな候補者はなんにんかはいる。その名前をここに挙げるのは，あまりにも礼を失することにもなるので割愛するが，わたしの頭のなかには間違いなくいる。いずれ，これらの人たちのなかから，後継者となる人が現れることは間違いないだろうと，これもまたわたしの確信にすぎないが・・・・。
_ 加藤周一には比べるべくもないが，ひところの大江健三郎の書くことに（とりわけ，エッセイ），わたしはかなり肩入れしたことがある。世代的に近いということもあって，まずは，小説の虜になった。新刊がでるとまっさきに書店に駆けつけて買ってきてむさぼるように読んだ。それが，ある時代から，かれの小説が面白くなくなってしまった。どうしたんだろうと思っていたら，「小説の時代は終わった」というようなことを言い出して，もう，小説は書かない，と宣言した。スランプだったのだろうか。と同時に，エッセイの説得力も急落した。ノーベル文学賞受賞は，それからしばらくしてからのことであった。わたしには意外だった。
でもまあ，一時期，好きだった作家がノーベル文学賞を受賞するということは，めでたいことではあった。そのご威光のお蔭といっては大変失礼な話ではあるが，ふたたび，メディアは大江さんに光を当てるようになる。しかし，わたしの眼を釘付けにするような文章にお目にかかることはなくなってしまった。
今日の朝日新聞・朝刊に，「定義集」がかなり大きなスペースをとって掲載されている。これは，月に１回くらいのペースで大江さんが担当しているコラム（それにしては大きいが）である。今回は，「文化は危機に直面する技術」という定義が見出しにおどっている。このアフォリズムは，山口昌男さんの近著『学問の春──＜知と遊び＞の１０講義』（平凡社新書）から引いたものである。たまたま，わたしは別の必要があって，山口昌男さんのこのご著書は，でてすぐに読んでいた。だから，なおのこととしかいいようがないが，大江さん，どうしちゃったの？という疑問を抱かざるをえなかった。
結論から述べておけば，「文化は危機に直面する技術」という「定義」についてなにも語ってはいないのである。ただ，山口さんの本からの引用だけでこと足れりとしている。しかも，その引用文は以下のとおり。
「今日比較研究をやっていく場合に一番重要な課題は何かというと，文化は，普通そうは考えられてないけれども，危機，クライシスに直面する技術であるということね。」
これだけだ。これでは意味をなしていない。
大きなスペースの前半は，ひたすらバッハの音楽を語り，武満徹さんとの交遊関係を語り，息子さんの光さんのことを語り・・・という具合に，ほとんどは自分の過去の思い出を語っているにすぎない。後半に入って，山口さんの本を取り上げてもなお，自分の思い出話がつづく。そして，とってつけたように，さきの引用文がくっついているだけ。
で，最後に苦し紛れに，危機についての私見がほんの９行，とってつけたように述べられているにすぎない。
かつては，粘着力のある，読者をぐいぐい惹きつけていく文章を書いた人だけに，これはどうしたことか，と首をひねるしかない。しかも，こういう文章をそのまま掲載してしまう朝日新聞はなにを考えているのか，と矛先はこちらに向かう。はっきり言って「無責任」である。大江さんの名誉にかけても，ご忠告を申しあげるべきではなかったのか。
山口昌男さんは，札幌大学学長時代に，「文化学会」を組織して『危機と文化』という学会誌を出している。山口さんにとっては，きわめて重要な定義であり，アフォリズムであるはずの「文化は危機に直面する技術」について，大江さんがひとことの解説もしない，ということの不自然さは歴然としている。
もう時間がないが，山口昌男，大江健三郎，武満徹，磯崎新と４人の名前をならべれば，この人たちがどういう連帯の仕方をしたかは，知る人ぞ知る話なのである。以下は省略。
