_ 玄ゆう宗久（「ゆう」はにんべんに有）さんのエッセイ集である『ベラボーな生活』禅道場の「非常識」な日々（朝日文庫）を楽しみました。

芥川賞作家でもあり，臨済宗のお坊さんでもある玄ゆう宗久さんのエッセイは，いまのわたしにはぴったりくるものが多いので，ちょっと時間があると探してきて読んでしまいます。わたしの育った寺は曹洞宗でしたので，同じ禅寺でも臨済宗の「禅」についての考え方や作法とは若干違うなぁなどと思いめぐらしながら読むのは，いまのわたしにとってはとても楽しいことの一つです。なるほど，なるほど，などと独り言を言いながら楽しんでいます。もう一つの楽しみは，やはり，なんといっても文章の運びの上手さを堪能するところにあります。起承転結のうまさは，やはり，プロだけあってうまいものです。こんな風にエッセイが書けるようになれたらいいなぁ，とわたしにとっては垂涎の的というところ。いかにも禅僧らしい，肩肘はらない，脱力の具合がここちいい。

とても気楽に書いているようにみえて，じつは，相当に深いところにまで踏み込んでいることに，あるとき突然気づく・・・これがまた快感でもあります。たとえば，黄檗宗（禅宗３派の一つ）のように精進料理を商売として食べさせることが世間に広く知られるようになった結果というべきでしょうか，お寺では肉食を断ち，お酒も飲まない，ということになっていると思われがちですが，これは佛教が形骸化した結果の産物にすぎない，ということをさらりと玄ゆう宗久さんは書き流しています。

たしかに，お釈迦さんは，毎日，托鉢をしてその日の食料を調達しては修行に励んでいました。ほとんど生涯にわたって托鉢をして暮らしていました。托鉢をするということは，世俗の人びとが食べているものを分けてもらうことですので，食べ物はすべて世俗の人たちと同じものでした。つまり，いただいたものはなんでも食べる，ということです。ですから，肉はだめとか，魚はだめとか，貝類はだめだとかは，お釈迦さんはいっさい言ってはいません。むしろ，逆に，修行道場で日々きびしい修行に励んでいる修行僧にあっては，定期的に肉食をすべしとすすめているほどです。奇人変人扱いされがちな一休さんもまた，おれはお釈迦さんの教えを忠実に守り，実行しているだけだ，と断言しています。たとえば，大阪の魚市場のみんなのみている前で焼き魚を食べてみせ，「いま，引導をわたしてやった」と嘯いたという話が伝わっています。

玄ゆう宗久さんは，こんな泥くさい話はいっさいもちだすことなく，もっとさらりと上品に，禅道場の「非常識」を紹介しています。読んでいて痛快そのもの。なんだか玄ゆう宗久さんが修行したという天龍寺の道場に入門したくなってくるほどです。いまからでも遅くない，とわたしのこころの奥底でささやいている声が聞こえてきます。

ついでといってはなんですが，禅佛教の専門用語の多くが，こんにちのスポーツの世界で用いられていることは意外に気づかれていません。柔道や剣道では当たり前のように用いている「道場」ということばそのものが，お釈迦さんのはじめた祇園精舎の修行「道場」からきているのも，その一つです。また，「形」や「型」などもやはり禅道場からの転用です。

そんな視点からこの本を読む楽しみもある，というにとどめておきたいと思います。一服の清涼剤としてお薦めです。

日本の武術は、禅宗と結びついていますよね。たしか柳生と沢庵和尚とのつながりでしょうか？間違っていたらごめんなさい。<br>その禅宗の考え方は、多少なりとも野球に結びついたと思います。
