_ 締め切りが過ぎてしまった仕事をかかえながら，それでも面白い本は読み始めると止まらない。困ったものである。
福岡伸一著『世界は分けてもわからない』（講談社現代新書）もそのうちの一冊。いつか時間があったら読もうと思って買い込んである本は山ほどあって，その日，その時の気分で手がのびていく本は異なる。久しぶりに福岡伸一の本に手がのびた。以前，読んだ『生物と無生物のあいだ』という目が覚めるようなインパクトが急によみがえってきて，『動的平衡』という本を押し退けて，『世界は分けてもわからない』の方に目が動く。
予想どおりの，いや，予想をはるかに上回る衝撃的な本であった。まず，タイトルからして刺激的である。『世界は分けてもわからない』のだとしたら，科学はいったいなにをめざしているというのだろう。しかも，著者は立派な分子生物学者だ。その著者が「世界は分けてもわからない」というのだから，いったいどういうことなのかと気がかりになる。ここに反応してしまう以上，あとは読むしかない。
この本の具体的な内容についての論評はここではしないことにしよう。それよりも，この本をとおして著者福岡伸一が投げつけてくる強烈なメッセージのいくつかを拾いながら，感想をのべておくことにする。
まず，とてつもなく大きな帯に躍る文字が，わたしの目をひく。「顕微鏡をのぞいても生命の本質は見えてこない！？」「科学者たちはなぜ見誤るのか？」「生命に部分はあるか？」「ヒトの眼が切り取った『部分』は人工的なものであり，ヒトの認識が見出した『関係』の多くは妄想でしかない。」「私たちは見ようと思うものしか見ることができない。」などなど。
これらのキャッチ・コピーの一つひとつにわたしは激しく反応してしまう。なぜなら，スポーツ史やスポーツ文化論という分野でものごとを考えてきた人間であるわたしもまた，ほとんど同じような地平にぶちあたって，考えつづけているからである。たとえば，「顕微鏡をのぞいても生命の本質は見えてこない！？」は，「資料をのぞいていても歴史の本質は見えてこない！？」と同義に見えてくる。スポーツの歴史を考えるとはどういうことなのか。近代歴史学の方法論は，資料を収集し，吟味し，整理・分類し，読解し・・・という具合の手続きを経て，歴史を再構成することにある。しかし，この方法論に終始する近代歴史学の致命傷は，資料のないところには歴史はない，という大きな落とし穴が待っているということだ。しかも，こんにちのわたしたちが手にすることのできる資料のほとんどは，よほどの恩寵にでも出会わないかぎり，支配権力にとって都合のいいものばかりである。支配権力にとって都合の悪い資料は，ほとんど焼き捨てられてしまうか，どこかに隠蔽されてしまっているからである。だとすれば，資料実証主義という方法に立脚するかぎり，そこから生まれてくる歴史の再構成は，どんなにあがいたところで支配権力にとって都合のいいものでしかない。わたしの所属しているスポーツ史学会とて，やはり，一つの支配権力として機能している。研究者としてこのことに気づいているか，いないか，その間にはとてつもなく大きな断絶がある。いまも，わたしはこの亀裂の前で頭を抱え込んでいる。だから，福岡さんの指摘するように「顕微鏡をのぞいても生命の本質は見えてこない！？」というコピーにいたく反応してしまう。
以下，まったく同じように，「科学者たちはなぜ見誤るのか？」⇒「歴史家たちはなぜ見誤るのか？」，「生命に部分はあるか？」⇒「歴史に部分はあるか？」，「ヒトの眼が切り取った『部分』は人工的なものであり，ヒトの認識が見出した『関係』の多くは妄想でしかない」はこのまま歴史学に当てはめることができる。「私たちは見ようと思うものしか見ることができない」にいたっては，もはや反論の余地がない。なぜならば，歴史研究の隠しようのない「ドグマ」性は，自分の見たくないものには蓋をしてしまうという人間の「ドグマ」性と表裏の関係にあることを示しているから。詳しくは，そのことに分け入って詳細な論考を展開した『西洋が西洋について見ないでいること』（Ｐ．ルジャンドル，以文社）を参照されたい。
こんなことを考えながら，この本を読み始めてみると，もっともっと驚くべき科学者の陥りやすい隘路についての論考が展開されている。そして，この本の最後のところで著者は，つぎのように告白する。
この世界のあらゆる要素は，互いに連関し，すべてが一対多の関係でつながりあっている。つまり世界に部分はない。部分と呼び，部分として切り出せるものもない。そこには輪郭線もボーダーも存在しない。
そして，この世界のあらゆる因子は，互いに他を律し，あるいは相補している。物質・エネルギー・情報をやりとりしている。そのやりとりには，ある瞬間だけを捉えてみると，供し手と受け手があるように見える。しかしその微分を解き，次の瞬間を見ると，原因と結果は逆転している。あるいは，また別の平衡を求めて動いている。つまり，この世界には，ほんとうの意味で因果関係と呼ぶべきものもまた存在しない。
世界は分けないことにはわからない。しかし，世界は分けてもわからないのである。
ここまで言われてしまうと，では，わたしたちはなにを，どのようにすればいいのか，と路頭に迷ってしまう。しかし，著者は達観している。だから，「あとがき」に相当する最後のところで，つぎのように明言している。
分けてもわからないと知りつつ，今日もなお私は世界を分けようとしている。それは世界を認識することの契機がその往還にしかないからである。

こうなったら，つぎは『動的平衡』に向かうしかないか。
