_ １２月１日の朝日の夕刊に「サンマリノ２勝目近い？」という見出しの，写真入りの大きな記事が掲載されていた。
わたしの眼は吸い込まれるようにして，この記事に書かれていることを追っていた。そして，「ニンマリ」と，こんな笑い方があったことを遠い記憶のなかから引っ張り出すようにして，しみじみと笑った。こころの奥底からほのぼのとしたものがわき上がってくる。いいなぁ，とひとりごとまで言っている。
２００３年の夏，ドイツ・スポーツ大学ケルンでの半期にわたる三つのゼミナール（授業）を終えて，家族で北イタリアを旅行したときの思い出がまざまざと蘇る。ミケーラ（最初に娘が友達になり，その後，家族みんなと仲良しになったイタリアの女の子）が車で案内してくれたサンマリノ。それはそれは素晴らしいところ。ちょっとことばでは説明ができない，おとぎの国のような世界。

イタリアに四方を囲まれた人口３万人の小国，サンマリノ共和国は，２０年前に国際サッカー連盟（ＦＩＦＡ）に加盟してから国際試合に１度しか勝ったことがない。世界ランキング２０１位はグアム，パプアニューギニアなどとともに最下位タイ。アマチュア選手主体の代表チームは，列強の壁に跳ね返され続けている・・・と，この記事を書いているのが稲垣康介。親戚？いやいや，まったくの赤の他人。

こんな記事を読みながら，さもありなん，と思わず膝を打った。車で走っていると，イタリア北部のなだらかな丘陵地帯の中に，突如として片側だけが切り立った崖になっている７５５ｍほどのティターノ山が見えてくる。この山の頂上に，かつて，ローマ皇帝によるキリスト教徒迫害を逃れて城砦を築き，立てこもって身を守りとおしてできた，現存する世界最古の共和国。世界で５番目に小さな国。面積は，山の手線の内側くらいしかない，という。その中心に，ティターノ山がある。だから，平野と呼べるようなところは，少なくとも，その城砦の上から眺めたかぎり見当たらない。家も丘陵地帯に点々とまばらにあるだけで，とても人口が３万もあるとは思えない。そういう国のサッカー代表チームがワールドカップ予選を戦っている，と聞いただけで頬がゆるんでくる。
そこには勝敗を度外視したサッカーが繰り広げられている。お互いの応援団が並んで座っている・・・なんとも，のどかな光景ではないか。サンマリノの選手は，そのほとんどがアマチュア選手。練習は週２回。試合そのものを楽しんでいる姿が眼に浮かぶ。
かつて，今福龍太氏が，あるシンポジウムの席で，南米の多くの国のサッカー・チームは，ワールドカップ予選を勝ち抜くための戦略を放棄して，ただ，ひたすら自分たちが美しいと信じて疑わないサッカーを探究している，と発言されたことを思い出す。勝つことだけがサッカーではない。もっと次元の違うところにある「サッカー美学」とでも呼ぶべきものを，ひたすら，追い求めていく，そういうサッカーもあっていいのだ，と。
サンマリノのサッカーは，それともまた違うサッカーを模索している，とでもいえばいいだろうか。いかによく戦ったか，善戦したか，自分たちのサッカーが実現できたか，といったようなものを追い求めるサッカー。そういうサッカーもまた楽しいのではないかと思う。
最近のスポーツ記事は，そのほとんどが「勝ち負け」の結果しか問題にしないものが圧倒的であるところに，こういう牧歌的で，のどかなサッカー・ワールドカップ予選を戦う記事を見出すと，なぜか，ほっとする。スポーツは「勝ち負け」だけではない，もっともっと多面的で，重層的な面白さがあるのだから，そういう記事も掲載してほしい。
サンマリノのようなチームは，世界の各地にわんさとあるはずだ。
そうだ，もう一度，サンマリノに出かけて行って，こんどはサッカーをみてこよう。
