_ ほかにやらなくてはならない仕事が山ほどあるというのに，「読みたい」という衝動抑えがたく，『ブラジルのホモ・ルーデンス』に手を伸ばしてしまう。でも，読み終えて，やはり，読んでよかった，としみじみ思う。
ひとくちに言ってしまえば，全編にわたって，今福節がうなりをあげて鳴り響いている，といえばいいだろうか。もう，どのページを開いても，今福さんの博覧強記ともいうべき守備範囲の広さとサッカーに寄せる深い深い「愛」に満ちあふれていて，まさに，今福さんの独壇場。こんな「サッカー批評」はちょっとだれも真似ができないだろう。どの章を読んでもしびれてしまう。まるで，ふぐ通の板東三津五郎が，かつて毒のまじったきわどい刺身を食べたときのような感覚といえばいいだろうか。と言っても，わたしは経験したことはないが。つまり，一度，味わったらやめられない，死ぬまでやめられない，という意味で。
では，いったい，どこに，どのように「しびれた」のか。それを説明するのは至難のわざだ。その部分は実際に読んでもらった方が早い。
ここでは，今福さんの攻め口について，少しだけ触れておくことにする。
冒頭にでてくるのは，文芸批評家の渡辺直己の『プロ野球観戦学講座』（論創社，１９８７）と『日本プロ野球革命宣言』（メタローグ，１９９７）を援用しながら，「批評」とはなにかと問い，「それが一種の＜暴論＞としてつくられている」側面に光を当てる。たとえば，渡辺直己は，「年報査定にゲームを美しく挑発した『芸術点』を加えよ」「もっともよく打つ打者にもっとも打席の回る一番をつねに与えよ」と力説する。つまり，野球というゲームをもっともっと面白いものに仕立て上げていくための，まさに，意表をつく提言をしていく。しかし，このような「一種の＜暴論＞」が成立するのはプロ野球だからだ，と今福氏は言う。そして，サッカーではこうはいかない，と。そこにはなにかがある，と。そして，今福さんは以下のように論を展開していく。少し長いが引用しておく。
その何かとは，おそらくサッカーという競技の本性にかかわっている。本書でこれから本格的に論じていくことになるが，サッカーという運動領域は本質的に近代スポーツの競技性をどこかで裏切ってゆく部分がある。勝敗による決着，ルールによるゲームの文法化，得点という数学的均質性の導入，国家による競技者や競技会の占有・・。これらの近代スポーツとしてのサッカーが身につけた属性は，どこかで，サッカーの示す混沌とした原初的な運動性によって裏切られている。そしてサッカー自体が，原型的には，快楽とか気まぐれとか審美性とか遊戯性といった反近代的生産原理によって成立しているとすれば，サッカーの本質をえぐりだそうとする批評は，そのまま近代世界批判へと，みごとに接続されることになる。あえて大胆な言い方をすれば，近代世界に対して「サッカー」というもの自体がすでに「批評」的な構造をもっている，ということなのだ。つまりサッカーは，近代世界のメカニズムと無意識とを照らし出し，その欠陥を露呈させる，批評の武器そのものなのである。サッカーは批評の「対象」であるばかりでなく，それ以上に，見事な批評の「方法」となりうるのだ。
このような論陣を張った上で，つぎのように言う。
サッカー批評は，サッカーを対象化し，サッカーを語りつつ，まさにサッカー的な批判力をサッカーを成立させる政治的・社会的な文脈への批評へと展開してゆくことで，そのまま近代の「世界」自体を語り，批判することが可能となるからだ。
という調子で，さらにさらに深みへと分け入っていく。こうした「批評精神」をわたしたちはこれまで欠落させたまま，のうのうと生きてきてしまった。深く恥じるばかりだ。しかし，このことに気づいた以上は，自分なりのスタンスで可能な「スポーツ批評」を展開していくしか方法はない。こういうことをほんとうに思い知らせてくれる内容がふんだんに盛り込まれている。大いに遅きに失したとはいえ，これから一歩を踏み出すしかなかろう，とみずからに笞打つ。それあるのみ。
