_ 数カ月前，「ボッ」という大きな音を立ててテレビの画面が消えてしまった。ちょうど１０年ほどが経過していた。こんどはプリンターが「カタカタ」という音とともに印字がうまくできなくなってしまった。テレビと同じころ買ったので，やはり１０年ほど経っている。
近くの電気屋さんに相談してみると，１０年はよくもった方だという。使い方が上手だ，と褒められてしまった。仕方がないので，新しいプリンターを購入。これが思ったよりも安かったので驚いた。日進月歩といわれる家電製品の技術革新と大量生産のお蔭だという。
テレビはなくても仕事に支障はきたさないが（それどころか，テレビを見なくなってから時間がたっぷりでき，仕事がとてもよく進む），プリンターはいまやなくてはならない必需品だ。午後２時ころ買って帰り，早速，セットアップにとりかかる。１０年前はもっとかんたんにセットアップできたと思ったのに，今回はなかなか手間がかかる。何回かに分けてダウンロードをし，再起動を繰り返しする時間も結構かかり，なんとか使えるようになったときには日が暮れていた。
パソコンのメカに弱いわたしとしてはよくできたと褒めてやりたい。もちろん，マニュアルがあって，その指示どおりにことを運ぶだけのことなのだが，そこに書いてある日本語の説明が理解できないのだ。何回も繰り返し読んで，その前後との関係から類推しながら，おっかなびっくりでクリックする。やり終えてしまえばかんたんなことなのだが，なにせ，慣れないことをやるのは疲れる。
さて，遅くなってしまったが，これからクリスマス・カードの挨拶文の印刷からはじまって，年末年始はいろいろと活躍する場がたくさんある。ついでに名刺もつくってみようかと思う。いろいろ楽しめた方がいい。カラー写真もプリントできるとある。こちらのマニュアルを読んで実行するには，よほどの時間がかかりそうなので，当分の間はできそうもない。でも，なんとか時間をみつけてチャレンジはしてみたい。
これは正月の楽しみに残しておこう。
さて，気分も一新して，仕事にとりかかるとしよう。
