2009-10-30 『タバコ狩り』を読む。
_ ＴＡＳＣ（タバコ研究センター）から本が２冊とどいた。その中の１冊がこれ。なにげなく読みはじめたが，どんどん引きこまれてしまった。
著者は室井尚（横浜国立大学教授）。平凡社新書。ことしの６月にでたばかり。ＴＡＳＣからとどいたのは，たぶん，『談』をとおしてのお付き合いがあるからだと思う。それにしても，なぜ，このわたしに『タバコ狩り』なのだろうか，と訝りながら読みはじめた。が，すぐに，その謎は解けた。わたしが考えていることと，この室井さんが考えていることとは，パラレルだ，ということだ。
つまり，たかが「タバコ」の話にすぎないけれども，どっこい「愛煙家」が世の中から排除される構造は，まさに，現代社会の，あるいは，世界の「縮図」そのものだ，という点にある。「嫌煙家」は正義，「愛煙家」はテロリスト，という構図にピタリとはまること。即ち，ヨーロッパ中世の教会権力が「魔女狩り」に走ったことと同じことが，いま，「科学」の「明証性」という「暴力」を背景にしてＷＨＯという健康権力が「タバコ狩り」に走っている，と。しかも，このままの流れでは，２０１０年には日本全国完全禁煙になってしまう可能性がある，という。
ＷＨＯが，健康に関するグローバル・スタンダードを「科学」の名のもとに，世界のすみずみまで浸透させようとしている。その一つが「魔女狩り」ならぬ「タバコ狩り」だというわけである。しかも，タバコの有害性にかんする科学的根拠がきわめていい加減なものでしかない，ということを一つひとつ具体的な論文をとりあげて，解きほぐしていく。まことに抑制のきいた，おだやかな語り口で，じゅんじゅんとＷＨＯが繰り出すタバコの害に関する科学的根拠の「大嘘」の構造を洗い出し，明らかにしていく。説得力満点である。
しかも，著者にいわせると，世界中の「タバコ狩り」に勢いをつけのが「９・１１」以後の「テロとの戦い」であったという。まるで，ＷＨＯの主張がゆいいつ「正義」であって，「愛煙家」の主張はたばこ産業のまわしもの，すなわち「テロリスト」と同じだ，と。この関係をもっとみごとな論法で展開していく。読んでいて心地よい。
しかも，最後の章では，いよいよ著者の本領発揮で，こうした「タバコ狩り」の過ちを，歴史と哲学を援用して，みごとに話の落ちをつけている。ニーチェやフロイトが言っていることに耳を傾けろ，と。これ以上の詳しいことはここでは省略する。ぜひ，本を読んで確認していただきたい。
ただ，とても気に入った文章がありますので，そこだけ，紹介しておきたいとおもいます。
・・・確かに，あらゆる文明はそれ自体が人間の深い病の表現であると言えますし，結局のところ理想的な文明システムなどというものはいつの時代にも存在しません。われわれが求めるべきなのは，完全なるシステムなどではなく，動物的な衝動に揺り動かされる人間の内なる「自然」と，全く人間のコントロールを受け付けない外的な「自然」との中間に中途半端にぶら下がっているだけの「決定的に不完全なシステム」としての文明の中で，いかにして自由に考え，自立して生き抜いていくことができるのかということなのです。
ここまで読み進んだとき，ああ，この人は信頼できる，とおもいました。おそらく，ほんとうはここからさらに突っ込んだ「文明論」「人間論」を展開したいところなのでしょうが，そこをさらりと交わしているあたりに，この著者の余裕とふところの深さを感じました。著者紹介をみると，『哲学問題としてのテクノロジー』（講談社），『情報宇宙論』（岩波書店）という著書がありますので，こちらも読んでみようかと思っています。
わたし自身は，元「愛煙家」，４０歳前後のころに不純な動機からたばこを止めて，もう３０年が経過しています。ですが，いわゆる「嫌煙家」ではありません。「受動喫煙」という不思議なことば使いに，ずーっと疑問をいだいていた人間です。「受動喫煙」による「煙害」をいうのであれば，自動車の廃棄ガスの方がはるかに「有害」である，と信じています。肺ガンとの因果関係をいうのであれば，タバコよりは廃棄ガスやその他の煙の方がはるかに大きい（桁違いに大きい）と考えています。現に，そういう根拠を提示した本を読んだこともあります。わたしは，そちらの意見を支持する者です。いま，その本の名前が思い出せないのが残念。
最後に言っておきたいことは，スポーツにおける「グローバル・スタンダード」の含みもつ「暴力性」については，ほとんどの人がなんの疑問もなく受け入れていますが，じつは，タバコどころではない，とてつもない構造をもっていることです。その一端は，『近代スポーツのミッションは終わったか』（平凡社）という本のなかでも展開されていますので，ご参照ください。そこでの主張と，この『タバコ狩り』がシンクロしていること，このことを知っているＴＡＳＣの担当者が，わたし宛にこの本を送ってくれたのだろう，と感謝している次第。
TASCの担当者の方の、博学さがよく分かります。ぜんぜん違う分野だと思っていたのに、実は同じ構造だったなんて、本当におもしろいですね。
